Types of Joinery

Essentially there are two types of joinery; exposed joinery and concealed joinery. Just like the terms imply, exposed joinery show the method in which the pieces are held together. This is very common in Arts and Crafts or rustic style furniture. Concealed joinery hides the construction methods so the pieces look like they are cut to size and held in place with magical glue.

Coming SoonThis box shows both types of joinery. The top is held together with concealed joinery while the sides expose a box joint. This mix of the two types of joinery is very common in furniture today. Most people want to conceal all of the joinery but would like to see dovetails on the drawers.
